Awaiting the Messiah
Jesus Reveals the Holy Spirit’s Work
Jesus tells us himself that he is spoken of in the Old Testament, saying, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”1
We can see these things are evident in the person of Christ throughout his ministry, but we can also see them evident in the words that are spoken of Jesus before his time.
Led by the Holy Spirit
Isaiah tells us that, “The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.”2
We can see these qualities in many of the Old Testament figures who were led by the spirit. Solomon had wisdom, David had spiritual understanding, Moses had a fear of the Lord. The Old Testament can continue to feed our souls because the same spirit that works in us today was working in them to prepare the way for the Messiah. We are united, past and present, in God.
Preparing Our Hearts
We can ask that the Holy Spirit would guide us in wisdom and understanding today just as he did with those who spoke of the coming Messiah.
